What to Do This Weekend

Half an hour from Charleston, South Carolina, you’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches that side of the Mason Dixon. Here are a few of our favorite things on Kiawah Island and nearby.
STAY
The Sanctuary
What: The stunning 4-year-old beachfront manse features a full-service spa, the swanky Ocean Room restaurant, three swimming pools, and unobstructed views of the Atlantic.
Why: It’s a religious experience.

EAT
Rosebank Farms Cafe
What: Fill up on fried green tomatoes; fried catfish; and, oh, yellow hominy grits.
Why: If they ain’t gonna fry it, you ain’t gonna try it.

Vincent’s Drug Store
What: Harken back to simpler times at the old-fashioned soda fountain-cum-pharmacy serving the best malts and burgers around.
Why: It’s more than a soda, jerk.

VISIT
Stono Farm Market
What: Get your veggies, herbs, and plants from the best farmers market around. And if it’s strawberry season, pick your own at their farm in nearby Wadmalaw.
Why: This little piggie goes to market.

RENT
A Bicycle
What: Explore Kiawah on paved bike paths. Check out the wildlife (watch out for gators), beautiful homes, and isolated beaches.
Why: Heaven on wheels.
