Dear cherished reader,

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we write today to say goodbye. After fourteen years delivering you the best in food, fashion, and fun, this train, as they say, is pulling into the station.

Rest assured that every single day that we have published DailyCandy, we have done so with delight.

Our mission was always to charm and inform you, whether telling you about an innovative new restaurant in Brooklyn, a trendy boutique in Chicago’s Gold Coast, or a groundbreaking San Fran band. Through the years, nothing made us happier than helping an emerging designer from West Hollywood find her audience or hearing that after we featured an attorney from Philly she quit her job to make brownies full-time.

But all good things must come to an end. And this, friends, is ours. On April 4, we will close our doors.

It’s been the ride of our lives, and we have loved sharing it with you.

Yours,
DailyCandy

Museums are hardly the only option for seeing thought-provoking art; your local mall will do just fine.

Odds are, if you frequent Anthropologie stores or ogle the window displays at Hermès and Ella Moss (pictured below), you’ve seen artist Jessica Pezalla’s nature-inspired installations. We couldn’t pass up an opportunity to quiz the Bramble Workshop founder on her home decor preferences and the key to Instagram success.

You’re leaving sunny SoCal for Portland. What will you miss most about living in L.A.?
Luckily, I’m still going to be working with a lot of clients in Los Angeles, so I’ll be here often. My favorite thing about L.A. is how varied and eclectic it is in every way, even the plant life: From where I sit, I can see Meyer lemon and avocado trees, cacti, rose bushes, palm trees, ferns, and bougainvillea.

Since you’ll only be coming back as a visitor from now on, what will your ultimate L.A. food itinerary include?
Impossible to decide! But the afternoon that will remind me most of my three lovely years in Atwater Village includes a hike in Griffith Park, followed by lunch at The Trails Cafe. I would also have to go to Proof Bakery for a chocolate croissant and Figaro or Alcove for happy hour.

You’ve worked on elaborate installations for everyone from Hermès to Ella Moss. What do your walls look like at home?
I’m definitely a collector of beautiful, unusual objects and I always save elements from my favorite projects, but I like to keep my home pretty minimal. I usually group art and objects in clusters and leave lots of open space. It’s nice to be in an uncluttered, tranquil environment after thinking so much about color, texture, and shape all day long.

Was there ever a design concept that seemed like a good idea in your head but was a total fail in real life?
It wasn’t a total fail, but now I know that tissue paper flowers are inclined to wilt on dewy mornings.

Do you ever craft in your free time? What do you make?
Ha. Good question. It’s tough for me to work on my own projects because I put so much creative energy into Bramble Workshop. But I love taking classes that give me an opportunity to experiment and make things for myself. I really enjoy ceramics and plan on taking a weaving class soon.

Your Instagram feed is an eye candy rabbit hole. Give us your tips for styling a winning shot.
Thank you! I’m partial to beautiful detail shots — I think it helps to shoot in the square format so that you can consider the composition while you’re shooting. Also, in terms of content, I think people like seeing projects in process — definitely photograph what you’re working on and what inspires you.

Favorite filter?
I don’t have a favorite filter, but I usually use Afterlight to increase the exposure a little bit.

If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, on a dream project, whom and what would it be?
I would love to make a large-scale textile installation with Sheila Hicks, Tanya Aguiñiga, or Sally England, because they’re incredibly skilled craftspeople with an intuitive sense of materials. My favorite work exists in the overlap between art, craft, and design.

Photos: Jamie Street; Zeke Ruelas; Rad + in Love / Courtesy of Jessica Pezalla

One writer's quest for glowing skin leads her (no surprises here) to Hollywood's go-to skin guru, Louise Deschamps. But was it worth it?

Facialists generally belong to one of two camps: those who bully (see: New York’s legendary “Queen of Mean,” Christine Chin) and those who butter up. Of course, the end game either way is to get you to buy more treatments and products, so I try to remain stoic to both approaches.

However, after Louise Deschamps, a resident aesthetician at the Beverly Hills office of dermatologist-to-the-stars Dr. Harold Lancer, told me I had the profile of a young Penélope Cruz, I was putty in her hands. I had come to her pristine treatment room to experience the famous stem cell facial, known for its rejuvenating properties and ability to create radiant, lit-from-within skin.

Things started with the usual cleansing and exfoliating rituals, followed by a round of (surprisingly painless) extractions. After that, Deschamps prepared a rose oil-coated custom sheet mask reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter. “Are you claustrophobic?” she asked, as she draped the mask over my face. Thankfully, I was not, and the warm, insulated sensation was a welcome reprieve from the harried outside world.

Finally, the piece de resistance: the stem cell serum. “Is it made from…?” I asked. “It’s vegan. The stem cells are from a marine plant,” assured Deschamps, applying a layer of the lightweight concoction before switching on an LED light to help my skin better absorb the serum. In other words: No animals were harmed in the making of my youthful complexion.

That evening and for several days afterward, I glowed. Even my co-workers noticed how good my skin looked.

So will I be paying Deschamps a repeat visit? Yessir. Or in the native tongue of my movie star doppelganger: Si, senor.

Available at Lancer Dermatology, 440 North Rodeo Drive, between Santa Monica Boulevard and Brighton Way, third floor, Beverly Hills (310-278-8444 or lancerskincare.com). Historically, leather staples are synonymous with sex appeal. But swathing yourself in hide on the daily can weigh you down.

Bandelier — a local leather-centric jewelry line — is proof that a little edge goes a long way.

Designer Andria Crescioni developed a love for the tough stuff while studying at Parsons, when she apprenticed to master craftsman Jason Ross. Now back in SoCal, she translates her appreciation for the American West (her next collection looks to the canyons and deserts of Arizona) and traditional leather-working techniques (cutting and stitching by hand) into minimalist necklaces and cuffs.

Forgo glitzy baubles for the adjustable-length Ritual necklace (a tassel adds drama with zero fuss) or collarbone-skimming Logan. Even simpler, the hammered brass Kiva choker lets plunging necklines soar, while the Kiva bracelet takes that rager of an arm party down a notch.

The black and nude palette makes for endless layering possibilities.

Go ahead — show some skin.

Available at needsupply.com and mohawkgeneralstore.com, $122-$198.

Photos: Andrew Lee / Courtesy of Bandelier

Just because your club hopping days are over doesn’t mean you’ve lost the need to get down. We corralled the best dance classes in town to delight movers and shakers at every skill level.

Groove is in the heart.

Align Ballet Method
If your childhood fantasy of becoming a ballerina morphed into a full-grown obsession, the six-week adult beginner series is a dream come true. Learn technique fundamentals while strengthening leg muscles and improving posture. Tights and leotards are encouraged but not required.

Tahitian Dance at L.A. Bellydance Academy
Fact: Hips don’t lie. Traditional Polynesian moves combined with rhythmic beats mean this rump-shaking class is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Honest.

Voguing at International Dance Academy
Though we can thank Madonna for bringing it into the spotlight, the modeling movement has swept dance floors since the ’60s. Instructor Eric Sanchez keeps things interesting by touching upon each of the three styles while making sure newcomers are up to speed.

Swing at 3rd Street Dance
Whether it was that snappy Gap commercial or Jon Favreau’s smooth moves in Swingers, you’ve been dying to put your saddle shoes to good use since the late ’90s. Beginners go for a spin at Lindy Hop bootcamp, while more experienced hepcats jive through West Coast Swing (the official dance of California).

The Bollywood Workout at Iron Fitness
All the excitement of a choreographed Bollywood dance number, combined with the toning and slimming benefits of a spirited fitness class.

Flashback Funk at LA Dancefit Studio
Bust a move to old-school jams and modern-day hits (James Brown, Justin Timberlake, and a whole lot of MJ) at this high-energy, all-levels-welcome hip-hop class.

Sweaty Sundays at The Sweat Spot
Warm up with a deep stretch, prance through a freestyle across the floor, and finish with a smile-inducing routine that leaves you deliriously happy and — just as the name suggests — thoroughly soaked.

Capoeira at Capoeira Brasil
The 500-year-old Afro-Brazilian art form is steeped in history and tradition. Fair warning: Making it inside the roda (a circle for dueling capoeiristas) requires focus, agility, and serious strength.

Bachata at By Your Side Dance Studio
Pro Aurora Rodriguez breaks down the basics of this traditional Latin dance step by step. Things can get steamy once a partner’s involved, so make this all-level group class your next date-night destination.

JJ Dancer Boot Camp
The 90-minute combo class at 3rd Street Dance fuses celebrity trainer/choreographer/founder Jennifer Johnson’s signature booty-shaking dance moves with calisthenics, kickboxing, and muscle conditioning for an intense yet fun full-body workout.

Photo: Courtesy of Align Ballet Method; Getty Images
