Maternity Fashion Tips from Style Expert and Author Amy Tara Koch

You’re the last person anyone ever thought would have a closet full of designer sweats. But pregnancy is a breeding ground for function over form.

We tracked down Amy Tara Koch, style expert and author of the soon-to-be released book Bump It Up, to help solve your most pressing fashion emergencies.

The problem: Round, squat, and close to the ground.
The fix: Visual elongation. Simple fixes like knee-high boots, open cardigans, and long scarves (think Stevie Nicks, not Hermès squares) trick the eye.
Avoid: Shiny fabrics attract light and draw attention to all the wrong places. And don’t even think about horizontal stripes.

The problem: Dry, flaky skin.
The fix: Cleanse your skin with a simple product like Cetaphil (or any oil-based cleanser) and give yourself a hydration boost with a homemade mask of olive oil, sunflower oil, or honey. Fake the glow by applying shimmer to the apples of your cheeks, nose, forehead, and eyelids.
Avoid: Foamy cleansers and soaps. Sodium lauryl sulfate, which creates the bubbly lather and is also found in dishwasher detergent and household cleansers, dries you out.

The problem: Big, bigger, biggest boobs.
The fix: Get a professional bra fitting. Stick with V-necks and scoop necks to reveal a tasteful bit of decolletage. Wrap dresses showcase your bosom without offending.
Avoid: Big patterns. Flowers, paisleys, and polka dots stretched out of shape — over a boob no less — are a fashion fiasco.

The problem: Out of balance.
The fix: Exhibit volume control. Tight on top (fitted white tank), flowy on bottom (boho skirt). Flowy on top (tunic), tight on bottom (maternity jeggings). Look for pieces that drape and skim in jersey and cotton.
Avoid: Excess material adds bulk and weight to your frame.

And the doctor says you’re doing fine in that department already.

For more maternity fashion tips, Bump It Up: Transform Your Pregnancy into the Ultimate Style Statement is available online at amazon.com.

25% off Puj Tubs
No more kneeling on hard tile or bending over backward to wash your newbie in the bath.
You’ll always cherish baby’s first steps, words, and kisses. But other things you’d rather forget (here’s looking at you, colic, bum rash, and random acts of biting).

Put everything on the record with Star RM’s This Is Your Book. The arty baby journal was designed by Chicago creative Ryan Maconochie, who wanted a quirky way to preserve memories after the birth of his daughter.

No too-precious teddy bear illustrations here; instead, you’ll find hand-drawn faces of U.S. presidents (circle the one from bambino’s birth year) and world maps (pencil in the countries at war). You can also jot down current stats, such as the price of a six-pack and the dollar-to-euro exchange rate.

Of course there are slots for basics (height, weight, hair color), plus space to draw family trees and paste pictures. With 122 pages, you won’t lack room to reminisce.

That doesn’t bite.

Available online at lulu.com.
Housekeeping Memo
To: Andrea
From: The Stuffy Family
Re: Breathing Easy

Glad to have you on the job. There’s a lot of sneezing and nose blowing in our home this winter, so get to work clearing the air. (We tried but ended up with jammed windows and a bad case of Swiffer arm.)

But you appear invincible, being a purifier that uses houseplants to sanitize indoor air. The Harvard prof who coinvented you found a genius way to speed up a plant’s natural filtration process. We simply drop in flora (aloe, peace lilies, and spider plants work best) and you draw in pollutants, including toxic gases. A whisper-soft fan pushes out fresh wafts.

You’re an eco dream, with no replaceable filters and low energy consumption. A looker, too: Designed in Paris, you resemble a modern terrarium rather than a machine.

Report directly to the nursery.

Hopefully, your first days will really suck.

Available online at amazon.com.
