Her efficient yet handsome home designs, including terrariums, a love letter kit (blasphemy), and popular apothecary matchstick bottle, smolder with recycled and sustainable materials.

The firestarter kit goes a step further, with harvested materials (locally gathered pine and needles, sap from Sonoma) and fifteen matches piled in a glass test tube. Mound each element as it appears in the bottle and light ’er up; just add the appropriate fuel (forlorn photos, letters, a lock of hair) and relish as lovesick mementos go up in smoke.

The quaint bottled kit is as appropriate on your mantel as in the back woods.

Joy the Baker's Roasted Garlic Wontons

Waste Not, Wonton Not

Being single on Valentine’s Day bothers us less than bad breath.

In fact, we take it as an opportunity to indulge in the sort of odorous (albeit scrumptious) dishes the dating world staunchly forbids. So we tapped L.A. food blogger Joy Wilson, a.k.a. Joy the Baker, to share the stinkiest recipe in her repertoire (her new cookbook hits shelves February 28).

Tic Tacs not included.

Roasted Garlic Wontons
Makes 30-36 pieces

Ingredients
1 garlic head
3 tbsp. olive oil
1 c. goat cheese
¼ c. fresh parsley, coarsely chopped
3 tbsp. pine nuts, toasted
½ tsp. sea salt
½ tsp. coarse-ground black pepper
30-36 wonton skins
1 egg, beaten

1. Preheat oven to 400°. Peel off outermost layers of garlic head and slice off its top. Drizzle cluster with olive oil and generously sprinkle with salt and pepper.

2. Wrap cluster in foil completely; roast 30-40 minutes or until tender. Cool slightly.

3. In a small bowl, combine roasted garlic, olive oil, goat cheese, parsley, pine nuts, salt, and pepper. Mash garlic; stir until ingredients are evenly mixed.

4. Position each wonton skin sideways, forming diamonds. Brush bottom of each diamond lightly with egg. Place 1 tsp. garlic mixture on each diamond top. Fold each one in half, making triangles; seal and press out air bubbles.

5. Fold each triangle in half horizontally (the filling will double over itself) and bring far edges together to create a tight little pocket. Seal edges with a few drops of egg.

6. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm about 2 inches of vegetable oil. Use a fry thermometer to bring oil up to 350°. Add several wontons to oil, being careful not to overcrowd. Fry about 1 minute, until golden brown on all sides. Remove and place on paper towels.

7. Keep finished wontons warm in 200° oven while frying the rest. Best served within an hour of frying.

Two (I Don't Have a) Date Recipes from Chicago Chefs

Date Sugarplums and Date Pudding Recipes

If Hallmark holidays aren’t your thing, celebrate Valentine’s Day with a smirk. Desserts from local pastry chefs Stephanie Samuels of Angel Food Bakery and Melissa Trimmer of C-House Restaurant fulfill your sweet tooth (and your sense of irony).

Stephanie Samuels’s (I Don’t Have a) Date Sugarplums
Yields two dozen “two-biters”

Ingredients
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
½ c. flour
½ tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 c. dates, chopped
1 c. walnuts, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an eight-by-eight glass baking dish.

2. In a mixing bowl, beat sugar and eggs until fluffy. Sift in flour, baking powder, and salt. Blend well.

3. Fold in dates and nuts and pour into prepared pan.

4. Bake exactly 30 minutes. Remove dish and stir the batter well with a spatula (it will be sticky).

5. Let it cool. Form into balls and roll in a cinnamon sugar mixture if you fancy.

Melissa Trimmer’s (I Don’t Have a) Date Pudding
Serves eight

Ingredients
1½ c., plus 1 tbsp., all-purpose flour
1 2/3 c. almond flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. corn syrup
1½ 6-oz. cans chestnut puree (available at high-end grocery stores)*
1 tsp. vanilla extract
¼ c. whole milk
2 sticks butter, room temperature
1 c., plus 1½ tbsp., light brown sugar
3 eggs
2 yolks
1 c. dates, pitted and chopped

1. Preheat oven to 325°. Spray eight crème brulee ramekins with nonstick spray and place them on a cookie sheet.

2. In a bowl, mix flours, salt, and baking powder.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together corn syrup, chestnut puree, vanilla, and milk.

4. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs and yolks one at a time, scraping bowl well after each addition.

5. Add the chestnut mixture and mix well. Gradually add flour mixture and beat until smooth. Fold in dates and pour evenly into prepared ramekins.

6. Bake until a cake tester inserted into the middle comes out clean. While still warm, drizzle with caramel sauce or your favorite liqueur.

7. Serve immediately with whipped cream.

*You can substitute almond butter for the chestnut puree.

So you broke up. And there are a million hearts and happy couples everywhere. We feel you.

Rather than spend Valentine’s Day alone with your cats, Pinot and Noir, take aim with help from illustrator extraordinaire Leah Duncan.

As longtime fans of Duncan’s prints, pillows, and towels, we asked the soon-to-be New Yorker (she’s relocating from Austin in a few weeks) to create a cheeky bull’s-eye to mark/mock the holiday.

To play, you’ll need a printer, projectiles (darts work), and photo of an offending party to tape in the center. Though the drawing seems too precious to mar, working out a bit of aggression is worth the extra sheet of paper.

Invite a few friends over, turn on, say, Beyoncé, and nail the target of your former affections one last time. Best part: There’s no need to keep score.
